ASBA Scholarship Program

Dear Arkansas Band Director:

If you have a student who is going to college and planning to major in music in the fall, the Arkansas Small Band Association awards scholarships to Arkansas seniors from A, AA, and AAA high schools who are planning to major in instrumental music education in college each fall. The winners will be selected by a panel of ASBA members with the most emphasis being placed on the applicant’s musical achievements, leadership in their school band, and written essay.

The link below will allow you to download an application for the scholarship. If you have more than one applicant, please feel free to print more copies of the form.

Completed applications should be returned to the address on the application form and postmarked no later than March 27. Please remind applicants to include a copy of their high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from you along with the other required information. In order for students to be eligible, applicants must be planning to major in music education (not performance) this fall.

Also encourage your students to fill out this application neatly and completely. The “brief composition” will receive much consideration.

Thank you very much for helping us provide this opportunity to your students!!

Trey Reely

President, Arkansas Small Band Association

Field Artist 3

FieldArtist is a relatively inexpensive ($160 compared to over $300 for others) drill design program that works very well. If you are wanting to write your own drill but think you can't afford a program, check this one out. Its drawbacks are that there is no easy to use manual nor is there an index that will make it easy to find what you need to find to do what you need to do, but so far, I have been able to find everything that I needed it to do. Here is the promo video from their web site.

Also, this link is for the opener I (Terry Hogard) wrote for Brookland using this program:

Help please!

Many of us want our bands to experience advanced music (difficult grade 2 and above), but are challenged in finding music to fit our particular set-up or instrumentation. This is where a collaborative web-site comes in handy.

I am currently collecting titles of concert literature (not pep or marching band at this point) of an advanced nature (challenging grade 2 and above) that you have performed with a band of limited instrumentation. These do not have to be just contest type pieces, but music that would challenge an advanced small band of very limited instrumentation. For example, I have a band of 5 flutes, 3 clarinets, 1 bass clarinet, 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 2 horns, 3 trombones, 1 baritone 1 tuba and 3 percussionists. I want to find modern music that is challenging, interesting, fun and which 3 percussionists can cover every part.

Please submit any entries to Terry Hogard at [email protected]
